Celebrities on magazines, what&#039;s playing on TV, an advertisement on the radio or newspaper headline. Popular media is always a good indicator of a period in time. There&#039;s a cumulative effect to the little details and gradually your readers will understand that the universe they&#039;re immersing themselves in isn&#039;t set in the present day. No need to tell them because they&#039;ll figure it out for themselves.  Most readers are smarter than New York editors give them credit for.
